Raiganj Circle of the ASI,

 Once erstwhile part of Kolkata Circle was formed on 27 august 2020 vides notification no T-19038/39/20 dated 27/08/2020. It covers North Bengal region having the districts known as Murshidabad, Malda, Uttar-Dakshin Dinajpur, Cooch Behar, Darjeeling districts including parts of Sikkim. Raiganj Circle possesses altogether 52 Monuments and Archaeological sites under its jurisdiction (List enclosed in annexure-1). Out of 52 monuments there are 2 in Cooch Behar, 2 in Darjeeling, 2 in Dakshin Dinajpur, 21 in Malda, 22 in Murshidabad while three in Sikkim. Besides, it has two prestigious Archaeological Museums; one is Hazarduari Palace Museum at Murshidabad while the second one is known as archaeological Museum Cooch Behar Palace, Cooch Behar. Both the museums are ticketed.

The region of North Bengal is very noteworthy in terms of various archaeological activities which include exploration, excavation, monumental heritage and ancient maritime trade activities. It is also important to highlight those excavations from 1938 to 1941 at Bangarh (which was earlier existed Rajsai division of Bangladesh) located in south Dinajpur revealed antiquity of this region goes back to third Cent BCE. Subsequently excavations were carried out throughout West Bengal region by the various organizations. So far as monument is concerned Hazarduari Palace and Cooch Behar Palace may be considered as outstanding potential of the Raiganj Circle.
